Abhyanga is an ancient Indian Ayurvedic oil massage therapy that heals and detoxifies the Body, Mind, and Spirit. It means "loving hands" and is a heartfelt, hands-on technique for integrating mind and body.

It is the perfect "loving" touch to release the flow of subtle physical and mental energy and give a lasting sense of relaxation.

Ayurvedic medicine is the oldest medicinal system in the world. It originated in northern India over 5,000 years ago.

It includes a system of herbalism similar to traditional Chinese medicine, but it also offers dietary regulation, yoga and other exercises, bodywork, and detoxification.

Ayurveda emphasises the prevention of diseases as well as maintaining a balance of body, mind and spirit.

Abhyanga Massage is often described as a luxuriously relaxing technique that uses warm oil to prepare the mind and body for peak performance. It is deeply relaxing and revitalising while gently cleansing and detoxifying.

If you are feeling nervous, anxious, lethargic, or sleep-deprived, the warm herbal and aromatherapy oils applied help calm the mind and nervous system, making you feel relaxed, peaceful, clear, focused, alert, and light.

In Ayurveda massage therapy, warm herbal and Aromatherapy oils deeply penetrate cells and release toxins at physical, mental, and spiritual levels. The massage detoxifies and heals at a cellular level. Hence, stress is removed from the root of the problem, promoting cell self-healing.

This deeply relaxing and stress-reducing therapy uses pure Ayurvedic aromatherapy oils. In Abhyanga, the oils are chosen based on the person's constitution (Vata, Pitta, or Kapha). Abhyanga Massage helps pacify aggravated Vata dosha caused by a hectic and stressful lifestyle and improper food habits, which are the root causes of many imbalances. It is targeted at rebalancing the doshas, eliminating toxins that can harm the body and its natural flow, improving digestion, and relieving stress and fatigue.

Having studied Ayurveda therapies in the Himalayas in India over 15 years ago. I have seen the true results it can bring with continued therapy. Not only with stress and balancing the doshas but also with improving people's state of mind and internal health and wellbeing."

What to Expect in a Treatment:

An Abhyanga Massage includes a detailed assessment of health and well-being before treatment and establishing your Dosha (body type). A dosha is a unique pattern of living force and energy that controls various body activities. When these Doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) become unbalanced, they can cause sickness, disease, and general health issues.

Once the therapist knows which dosha imbalance is present in the body, the therapist will choose the appropriate dosha aromatherapy oil for the treatment. The chosen oil is then heated and will remain warm throughout your massage.

The music, aroma, heating, and lighting will all reflect the dosha needs present on the day of your treatment.

You will then be asked to relax on the massage bed. You will receive a deeply relaxing head, neck, and shoulder massage, as well as a face, chest, abdomen, arms, legs, and finally, a back massage. The massage will use heated, warm dosha aromatherapy oil, relaxing strokes, pressure points (Marma points), and intuitive flowing movements that work on the skin and muscles of the body.

At the end of the massage, you will be covered in warm blankets and allowed to rest, allowing the oils to absorb into your skin. A fresh herbal tea and snack specifically made for your dosha will then be brought to you. You are then asked to take your time to come off of the massage bed, change, and enjoy your tea and snack. You will also receive some dietary and lifestyle information to take home and read to help maintain the benefits and improve your dosha imbalances.

To avoid rushing off after your treatment, it is highly recommended that you take your time after the massage, preferably taking the afternoon or the rest of the day or evening off. This will allow you to enjoy the healing oils and the healing benefits of this deeply relaxing massage.

Before Your Treatment:

It's worth considering that the oils used in the massage are richer in consistency, and you might not want to return to work or do the weekly shopping straight after your treatment. If you can clear your diary for the rest of the day and evening, you can spend longer in post-Abhyanga heaven at home.

Avoid eating a heavy meal or drinking alcohol in the hours leading up to your massage.

Please tell your practitioner about your medical history when asked; it's important to tell them if you are - or think you may be - pregnant or have any health conditions or injuries anywhere on the body or any recent operations.

The massage is performed traditionally without wearing much. Disposable paper thongs are provided, and your modesty is covered with a sheet or a small towel. These steps are taken to avoid interrupting the continuous flow of the massage.
