What is the Immune System?
THE BODY’S DEFENSE MECHANISM
· THE Immune system is the body’s defense mechanism.
· It is highly adaptive, and can be programmed & reprogrammed according to the new problems it encounters.
· It fights viruses & bacteria & clears out damaged tissue, destroys abnormal cells.
· Physical barriers are the first line of defense.
· If these are penetrated, Innate or Natural immunity provides an immediate non-specific response.
· Third line of defense. Adaptive immunity adapts its response to improve its recognition of the pathogens.
KEY CONCEPTS:
Common to all the response are the barrier structures (Skin/Epithelium) and the innate immune response located within.
A key tool in the process is inflammation- a natural response to damage or invasion that allows body to fights or repair it.
There are two broad types of responses-TH1 (chronic inflammation) and TH2 (Allergy).
The inflammatory response is controlled by a number of messenger systems: interleukins, T Reg. cells, histamines and prostaglandins.
BOOSTING IMMUNITY:
Gut Flora: Difference in the indigenous intestinal flora might affect the development and priming of the immune system in early childhood.
Lack of adequate macronutrients & selected micronutrients, (especially Zinc and selenium) can lead to immune deficiency and infections.
Respiratory infections may increase one’s risk of developing asthma especially in young children.
A history of bronchiolitis or croup in early childhood is a predictor or asthma risk in later life.
Common persistent and debilitating childhood infections include tonsillitis and otitis media.
